Tourist Accommodations Statistics Now Available – January to April 2020

Friday, August 7, 2020

Accommodations operators across the province report that 397,000 room nights were sold as of the end of April 2020. This represents a decrease of 31%, or 178,000 fewer room nights sold, compared with January to April 2019.

The full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is evident in the sharp decline in room nights sold in April. There was a decrease in room nights sold of 75% compared with April 2019.

Monthly and regional breakdowns of accommodations data for January to April 2020 are now available at https://tourismns.ca/research/tourism-statistics.

Data collected by AirDNA shows room nights booked through sharing economy platforms reached 121,000 as of the end of June 2020, a decrease of 21% from the same period in 2019. Although room nights booked through sharing economy platforms show significant declines in April (-24%), May (-49%), and June (-48%), bookings through sharing economy platforms do not appear to have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to the same degree as other accommodations during this period.

Tourism Nova Scotia gathers and reports tourism performance statistics on behalf of the tourism industry. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we paused data collection at Amherst and the Halifax International Airport. As a result, we are not able to report visitor statistics at this time. We are working with various data sources to develop estimates of visitation to Nova Scotia up to the end of July. Statistics will be shared when the data is available later this year.
